Looking for a new leader

first_imgIn fact, there are three board members – Sam Guyan, Sally Rivera and Walker – who are past presidents. And a fourth, Margo Reeg, was once part of a group of three who served as president. But the chapter members would love to have a president, Walker said. The terms of three other positions on the board also expire. And these positions don’t have to be filled by a woman, Walker said. “We’re open to male members, too,” she said. Joan Ewing and Carole Restovich are serving as the chapter’s nominating committee. The election will be held at a time to be set in May. Those interested in applying, should call Ewing at (562)693-3580. NEW OFFICE: Assemblyman Charles Calderon, D-Industry, has found a district office. It’s former Industry Democrat Assemblyman Ed Chavez’s office. Calderon was without an office because he allowed the former assemblyman representing his 58th Assembly District, state Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, to keep his office. The new office is at 13181 N. Crossroads Parkway, Suite 160, Industry, CA 91746. Telephone number is (562)692-5858, and the fax number is (562) 695-5852. While Calderon and Chavez represent different districts, the new office is in Calderon’s 58th Assembly District, not Chavez’s 57th district, said Tom White, Calderon’s chief of staff. “It’s our belief that it was in our district all along,” he said. Chavez’s office became available because his successor, Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina, moved into a different office in West Covina. Editor’s note: It’s Politics reports Saturdays on the ins and outs of Whittier-area politics and city government. The Whittier chapter of the League of Women Voters is looking for a few good women – or men – but the group at least want to find someone to serve as its president. The chapter hasn’t had a president in two years. It has a board, but no president. “I can’t explain exactly why,” said Beverly Walker of Pico Rivera, who is second vice president. “We have a lot of experienced board members and we sort of muddle through. But we don’t have a president.” last_img read more
