first_imgTRAINER QUOTES MARTIN GARCIA, SWEET MARINI, SECOND: “She got a little bit tired. We were going pretty fast up front and when we got to the stretch the other horse just got by us today.” ELVIS TRUJILLO, SAM’S SISTER, WINNER: “It was the perfect trip. I knew there was going to be a lot of speed in there and I knew it would be fast early on. But I knew that sooner or later they would have to stop. She’s a nice filly. I knew Martin (Garcia on Sweet Marini) would stop; it was too fast for three horses head-to-head.” JOCKEY QUOTEScenter_img JERRY HOLLENDORFER, SAM’S SISTER, WINNER: “We got a 22 and 43 (fractions), so it makes it a little easier to close ground. We thought that might happen, but then when Dancinthenightaway kind of shook loose a little bit, it looked a little bit risky. But we were able to sustain and run her down in the end.“I’m just taking these races one at a time (when asked if she might stretch out). We thought she would run long (entered in Saturday’s La Canada at 1 1/16 miles, but scratched), but we thought this was a more advantageous race, so that’s why we went here.“We’ll take a look at a few different things (races).”NOTES: The winning owners are Mark Dedomenico of Belleview, WA; Jerry Hollendorfer of Point Richmond, CA; and George Todaro of Seattle. -30-last_img read more

Report: Bush OK’d spying on Americans

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORERose Parade grand marshal Rita Moreno talks New Year’s Day outfit and ‘West Side Story’ remake Government officials credited the new program with uncovering several terrorist plots, including one by Iyman Faris, an Ohio trucker who pleaded guilty in 2003 to supporting al-Qaida by planning to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge, the report said. But some NSA officials were so concerned about the legality of the program that they refused to participate, the Times said. Questions about the legality of the program led the administration to temporarily suspend it last year and impose new restrictions. Caroline Fredrickson, director of the Washington legislative office of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the group’s initial reaction to the disclosure was “shock that the administration has gone so far in violating American civil liberties to the extent where it seems to be a violation of federal law.” Asked about the administration’s contention that the eavesdropping has disrupted terrorist attacks, Fredrickson said the ACLU couldn’t comment until it seems some evidence. “They’ve veiled these powers in secrecy so there’s no way for Congress or any independent organizations to exercise any oversight.” The Bush administration had briefed congressional leaders about the program and notified the judge in charge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the secret Washington court that handles national security issues. Aides to National Intelligence Director John Negroponte and West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, declined to comment Thursday night. The Times said it delayed publication of the report for a year because the White House said it could jeopardize continuing investigations and alert would-be terrorists that they might be under scrutiny. The Times said it omitted information from the story that administration officials argued could be useful to terrorists. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Bush authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States – without getting search warrants – following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, The New York Times reported. The presidential order, which Bush signed in 2002, has allowed the agency to monitor the international phone calls and international e-mails of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of people inside the United States, according to a story posted Thursday on the Times’ Web site. Before the new program began, the NSA typically limited its domestic surveillance to foreign embassies and missions and obtained court orders to do so. Under the post-Sept. 11 program, the NSA has eavesdropped, without warrants, on as many 500 people inside the United States at any given time. Overseas, 5,000 to 7,000 people suspected of terrorist ties are monitored at one time. The Times said reporters interviewed nearly a dozen current and former administration officials about the program and granted them anonymity because of the classified nature of the program. last_img read more

Zimbabwe clinch historic series win over Sri Lanka

first_imgZimbabwe clinched its first One-Day International series win against Sri Lanka after beating the hosts by three wickets in the decider to secure a 3-2 victory on Monday.Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer won the toss and sent Sri Lanka into bat, with his bowlers restricting the hosts to 203/8 in 50 overs. Opener Hamilton Masakadza then scored 73 runs to help the tourists reach 204 in the 39th over with three wickets in hand, despite a middle-order batting collapse. It was Zimbabwe’s first ODI series victory over Sri Lanka in six attempts.Offspinner Sikandar Raza played a key role in Monday’s victory, finishing with 3/21 — his best bowling figures in one-day internationals, before scoring 27 runs at the end to earn a victory that had begun to look in doubt.Seamer Tendai Chatara struck the first blow, having in-form batsman Niroshan Dickwella caught by wicketkeeper Peter Moor with the total on 3 in the second over. Dickwella had scored successive centuries in the previous two games.Raza had Kusal Mendis caught by Cremer and then bowled Upul Tharanga to leave Sri Lanka tottering on 31/3.Opener Danushka Gunathilaka and skipper Angelo Mathews combined for a 47-run partnership but Mathews fell for 24, caught by Masakadza off Cremer.Gunathilaka brought up his seventh one-day half-century and was dismissed for 52.A flurry of wickets saw Sri Lanka eight down for 153, before ninth-wicket pair Asela Gunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera added 50 runs to give the hosts a more respectable total. Gunaratne was their top scorer with 59 runs not out.In reply, Masakadza and fellow opener Solomon Mire dominated Sri Lanka’s attack with a 92-run partnership which ended when Mire (43) was bowled by Gunaratne.advertisementMasakadza scored his runs in 86 deliveries, including nine fours and a six. He was dismissed when Zimbabwe’s total was on 137, triggering a collapse in which Zimbabwe lost five more wickets for 38 runs to reach 175/7.However, Raza came to the rescue with a run-a-ball 27 to see his side through to a historic win.last_img read more

Panathinaikos’ Nightmare…Xanthi

first_imgLike last year, Xanthi has defeated Panathinaikos in Athens 1-2 (then 0-1) to earn their first victory of the season. Steele made tragic mistakes on both goals from the visitors as Pablo and Vasilakakis found the back of the net. Xanthi took the lead in the 34th minute and Leto equalized midway through the first half before a quick response from Xanthi gave them the 1-2 victory. Panathinaikos’ loss drops them two points behind the new league leaders Olympiacos.Xanthi, who defeated Panathinaikos last year 0-1 in Athens, came to the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium hoping for an unlikely first win of the season. The visitors surprisingly took the lead when Pablo da Lucas’ free kick was misjudged by Steele and the ball ended up into the back of Panathinaikos’ net. The goal clearly troubled the hosts as they could not string up a good attack and went into the break behind in the score. In the second half, Panathinaikos looked for a quick equalizer which came in the 62nd minute when Leto’s shot took a deflection, leaving Zivkovic with no chance to deny the effort. With plenty of time remaining and the momentum on their side, Panathinaikos hoped to complete the comeback against Xanthi, but three minutes later Vasilakakis stunned the hosts once again when his clever (and impressive) half-volley effort went over the head of Steel (who was clearly out of position), re-giving Xanthi the lead. Panathinaikos went on the offensive as they trailed in the score, but it was evident that Panathinaikos’ attack did not pose a threat to the visitors. M’boku’s shot was the only clear chance on goal for the Prasini as Xanthi held onto their surprising first win of the season.Xanthi’s first 3 points of the season comes in the unlikeliest of fashion, against the current SuperLeague leaders (before the beginning of Matchday 7). The win now puts Xanthi on 5 points while Panathinaikos now sits in second, two points behind the new league leaders Olympiacos. Both Xanthi and Panathinaikos play away in Matchday 8, facing Platanias and Veria, respectively.
